An Aquathlon is an endurance race combining a swim followed by a run, they are incredibly popular as starting points for many endurance athletes and are a great training race for those doing triathlons later in the year.

Our TRAINING RACES offer the competitors an opportunity to gauge fitness, practice mass swim starts, swimming with others, practice transitions and to add a element of competition to your training in a relaxed and inexpensive environment.

This will enable you to try new things and make sure that you get a great workout as well as preparing yourself for your major ‘A’ races during the summer.

Details about the Ham Lake swimming venue:

The address details for your Sat Nav are Thames Young Mariners, Ham Fields, Riverside Drive, Richmond, TW10 7RX, UK

The closest train stations are Strawberry Hill and Richmond.

There are toilet and shower facilities at the venue.

There is ample parking for cars and safe places to lock and store bicycles whilst you swim.

Entry fees for the London South West Aquathlon Races:

Short Distance 750m/5km (18yrs +) £15.00 (Free for Race Team Members)

Long Distance* 1250m/10km (18yrs +) £15.00 (£10 for Race Team Members)

*Long distance is not available on 22 Aug & 12 Sep due to fading light in the evenings

We are allowing competitors to decide on your race distance on the morning of the race when you register and collect your swim hat. We have decided to offer this because over the past two year people have regularly changed their minds due to weather, their fitness etc. This way you can literally choose the distance that’s right for you when you arrive at the race.

Please take time to read through this information prior to your race:

Race day evening:

The races will start at 7:00pm on Tuesdays and 8:00am on Sundays so we ask that you arrive in plenty of time to change, register, lay out your transition area and warm up prior to the race start. You will need to register your attendance at the registration desk where you will be given the following things:

– A coloured RGActive swim hat relevant to your swim distance.

– On your hand will be written a ‘Number’ or ‘Letter’, this will be how the race marshals are able to record your time at the finish line of the race.

At the registration desk you will also be able to purchase a selection of items including Blueseventy goggles, swim toys as well as sports lubricant, energy products and more.

Race Distances:

There are two options for race distance.

The Short 750m swim (1 lap) followed by a 5km run (1 lap).

The Long 1,250m swim (2 laps) followed by a 10km run (2 laps).

The distances for both races have been measured using GPS equipment. However it is possible that the marker buoys in the water may move marginally so please take this into consideration.

All athletes will start the race at the same time of 7:00pm whichever race they are competing in.

THE SWIM:

There will be two race options/distances to choose from, however EVERYONE will start in the same ‘Mass start’ at 7:00pm.

Everyone will complete the first full lap of the lake and exit the water via the matted ramp.

SHORT: On exiting the water the competitors racing the sprint distance (750m swim) will follow the cones to your position in the transition area where you will remove your wetsuit and have your running kit ready and waiting. Once you are ready to run you will exit the transition area at the far end where your time will be recorded by the RG Active time keepers. Note: There is to be NO nudity in the transition area, what you wear under your wetsuit must remain on for the run!

Those competitors competing in the longer distance races will NOT exit the lake and continue the loop in the upper part of the lake to complete their additional lap(s). At the end of the second swim lap they will exit the lake once again via the ramp and and follow the cones to your position in the transition area where you will remove your wetsuit and have you running kit ready and waiting. Once you are ready to run you will exit the transition area at the far end where your time will be recorded by the RG Active time keepers.

Note: There is to be NO nudity in the transition area, what you wear under your wetsuit must remain on for the run!

THE RUN:

Once you have left the transition area you will follow the driveway of the Ham lake venue turning left onto Riverside Drive.

SHORT: On exiting the TYM venue through the gate you will turn LEFT and run along Riverside drive until the t-junction at the end of the road where you will again turn LEFT onto Ham street. Follow Ham street all the way down to the car park where the river Thames will be directly in front of you. Once again you turn LEFT onto the tow path and follow the toe path along the river heading towards Kingston. You will follow the toe path until you get to Teddington lock where you will turn LEFT following a path up to Riverside Drive. When reaching Riverside drive you turn left onto the footpath. Follow the footpath until you see the entrance to the race venue, turn LEFT into the venue and follow the driveway all the way to the finish!

LONG: On exiting the TYM venue through the gate you will turn LEFT and run along Riverside drive until the t-junction at the end of the road where you will again turn LEFT onto Ham street. When reaching Riverside drive you turn left onto the footpath. Follow the footpath and you will see the entrance to the race venue, but your distance involves a two (2) lap run so DO NOT run into the TYM venue, carry on Riverside drive repeating lap 1. At the end of your second lap turn LEFT into the venue and follow the driveway all the way to the finish!

When running through the finish line we ask that all competitors be respectful of the time keepers and help them to record your numbers accurately so the results will be correct when you receive them. Please make sure the ‘number’ or ‘letter’ you have written on your hand is shown to the time keepers when you cross the finish line, this signifies YOU and will cross referenced with your time when the results are complied after the race.

Now all you have to do is Enter, Participate and Enjoy!
