In sports, a coach is an individual involved in the direction, instruction and training of the operations of a sports team or of individual sportspeople.
Coaching refers to the activity of a coach in developing the abilities of the athlete. Coaching tends to focus on an existing problem (from which to move away from) or a specific outcome that an athlete wishes to achieve (move towards).
Coaching can be wholly athlete-centered and responsive to the athlete’s objectives and needs. Coaching can also involve setting up a programme for the athlete that creates a ‘learning journey’ over a set period of time.
Coaching can be performed on a 1-2-1 basis, or can involve groups, clubs and teams but the outcomes and goals for the coach and is to assist the athlete in reaching and achieving their specific outcome.
